For most, golf is learned through a series of discoveries or moments of truth. Unfortunately, most beginners start without instruction. Or worse, with the advice from someone who doesn’t know the first thing about how to teach the game of golf. Bad advice turns to engrained habits which lead to frustration. It is important to understand that any good golf tips should give you a frame of reference – one that can be translated into movement and engrained to perfection. But what is most important is that the golf tips translate into “Aha” moments.
The Grip
Without getting into to nuances of the grip, we will try to address the number 1 problem that all golfers of all levels struggle with – Grip Pressure!
Loosen up man! You’re on the golf course having fun. Why the stress? Oh yeah, a two hundred ten yard par 3 over water and into the wind. It is situations like these that cause golfers to tighten up and strangle their clubs.
If every golfer corrected nothing but their grip pressure, the average score would drop 5-10 strokes! How? Think of holding the club as if you were holding a bird. You want to hold it tight enough to not let it go, but light enough to not hurt it. Think about it – the average club head weighs less than 300 grams. Why the extra tension? Just use enough energy to swing freely and not let the club go flying. You will create more club head speed and hit the ball further. Think “BIRD IN THE HAND” – that includes the moment of impact too!
Swing Free
“Trust it!” you’ve been told. Yeah right. Trust isn’t built on command! Trust is built through repetitious success. But what does trust do to you? It relaxes you. Anyone can relax! And a relaxed state of mind and body is far more likely to produce a functional golf swing that can repeat itself.
A great way to stay relaxed is to ball up a piece of gum and put it between your front teeth. If you can learn to hit golf shots without biting through the gum, you can stay relaxed and learn to “trust it”! Remember, tension starts in the face and neck. It is darn near impossible to tense up with a relaxed jaw! This is a great golf tip because it required NO thinking – just a piece of gum!
